This class offers the therapist a variety of ways to help enhance and polish a traditional massage, including techniques to gently assess the body, comfort and ground clients, based on many different teachings and philosophies.  This day includes a brief history of CranioSacral Therapy and its founders, Still, Sutherland and Upledger, a comparison of CranioSacral Therapy’s beginnings and what we know today, as well as different ways we can use soft, gentle techniques as opposed to deep and invasive modalities to physically and energetically help improve our clients’ relaxation and pain management.  This is a ¾ day of demo and hands-on practice.  Students should bring 2 flat sheets, dress comfortably and bring or wear socks.

*This is not an Upledger Cranio Sacral class, though some hands-on techniques may be similar to Upledger’s, and some holds may mimic those in the practice of Reiki.  The techniques are taught for comfort and relaxation only, and the notion that we can move cranial bones, feel/stop/start cerebral spinal fluid, feel “restrictions”, diagnose disease and disorder, feel and absorb energy, read peoples thoughts and minds, and treat trauma is not taught or supported in this class.

This is the Cupping class you want! Learn one of the most in demand massage techniques available! This incredibly effective therapeutic treatment can be done as a stand alone massage treatment or easily added to your existing massage sessions! This class is taught using silicone cups- just as powerful as other cup types- but much more versatile and simpler to use! Class consists of approximately 1 hour lecture and discussion and 7 hours of demonstration and practice of techniques. Please bring sheets, face cradle cover, and lubricant of choice. Highly skilled soft tissue therapists such as PTs and OTs use what are commonly referred to as muscle energy techniques as an integral part of treating soft tissue pain and dysfunction. Set yourself apart from other massage therapists by learning how to safely and effectively incorporate some of these advanced techniques into your massage sessions! Therapeutic massage clients appreciate this interactive approach that enlists them to activate specific muscles on request while you’re working. These comfortable techniques facilitate the release of soft tissue restrictions, increase range of motion and decrease pain. Palpating with a partner, we will review key muscles of the upper body on day one, lower body on day two, including origins, insertions and actions and learn techniques designed to specifically target each muscle covered. Class consists of approximately 3 hours lecture and demonstration, 3 hours palpation and muscle location, and 10 hours practice of techniques. Lomi Lomi is a traditional massage technique from the islands of Hawaii. Lomi Lomi means “massage with caring hands”. Lomi Lomi’s energy comes from the movement of therapist to the client. The movement that is transferred to the client is much like a wave of the ocean or a tropical breeze; each movement feeds into the next. The practitioner uses massage oil along with their forearms to create ironing, circling, sawing, and soothing massage motions. Lomi lomi is a must have modality in the spa environment, as well as a great addition to your personal, therapeutic massage menu. Students will need to bring a towel large enough to wrap around themselves, sheet set with face cradle cover, and four large hand towels. Students should wear comfortable clothing.

This is our spa certification course in pregnancy and postpartum massage. Nurturing the Mother® has certified 1000s of massage therapists in pregnancy and postpartum massage since 1990. This method utilizes a comfortable, secure side-lying position to avoid undue pressure on a growing abdomen and the lower back. Mothers are completely supported by pillows, keeping hip, knee and ankle on the same level to avoid pulling on the sacroiliac joint and to maximize blood and lymph circulation.  Side-lying is the safest for mother and baby, and educates the client about the ideal sleeping position.

This Nurturing the Mother® protocol uses a combination of the following methods:

  • Calming Swedish massage strokes for deep muscle relaxation, tension release and increased circulation
  • Gentle range-of-motion and stretching movements to relieve pressure through neck, shoulders, rib cage, lower back and hips, and to promote greater strength, flexibility and balance
  • Deep tissue work in the hip and gluteal area to help alleviate chronic lower back and hip pain
  • Abdominal massage for round ligament pain, to support digestion, increase circulation to the placenta and baby and to increase awareness of the baby. The baby will feel and benefit from the massage.
  • Lymph drainage strokes to reduce pregnancy induced edema
  • Cranial-sacral and polarity therapy for physical/psychological/emotional/spiritual centering
  • Acupressure and reflexology techniques shown to be effective in treating many common pregnancy related complaints

 WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Anatomy and physiology for pregnancy and birth
  • Pregnancy massage sequence
  • Cautions and contraindications for pregnancy massage
